Names on a Franc from the 117th - Know Anybody? Normandy/Joe Labriola

I thought I'd post what I've learned here in case the family of any of these men may stumble upon any mention of my hero, my beloved grandpa, GI Joe Labriola, who just went to Heaven this past December.

A combat medic in the Medical Detachment, 17th Infantry, 30th Division, my grandpa arrived in Normandy on D-Day +4, June 10, 1944, and survived the tragic, accidental U.S. bombings on July 24-25, 1944, where he was wounded, then later transported to a hospital in England where he spent many months in recovery. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, among other honors. Thankfully, he left us with many wonderful souvenirs and a few snapshots. Though he almost never spoke about his service, and when he did, the short, horrific memories brought such tears of anguish that we never pressed him for more details, he managed to sit down to write a page filled with his memories of the invasion in 2006. We also have a cherished newspaper article that he wrote on August 4, 1944 for the paper back home in Blue Island, Illinois which discusses his movements overseas.

I've always been fascinated by several souvenir French bills my grandpa brought home from Normandy. Thanks to the roster on this site, I think I've managed to learn the first names of several of these men - which is interesting, but I'm not sure what to do now that I've got some names! Is anyone here related to these guys?

Here's a photo of the bill itself, in his handwriting, listing the names of 30 men (including himself), who appear to be fellow members in the 117th:

Research Help - 430th

My father was with the 430th AA AW Battalion, Battery D which was attached to the 30th Infantry at certain periods. My father, Andrew J. Pluchinsky, Serial #33762192, died on December 23, 2007 at the age of 82. I have been trying to do some research on his unit and its movements from Normandy to the Elbe. The problem is that it is difficult to get information on "attached units." Especially since the 430th has no unit history written. I am trying to figure out how to find out what larger units the 430th was attached to from Normandy to the Elbe. I know for a fact that it was attached to the 30th Infantry in October 1944. In addition, the 30th Infantry's newspaper "The Tomahawk" contains articles on the 430th in March, April, and May, 1945.

Help - does anyone know if the 430th was attached to the 30th Infantry throughout the Normandy to Elbe campaigns? Like most WW II veterans, my dad did not talk about the war. I am hoping that there are a lot of sons and daughters of WWII veterans that are trying to find out as much about their parents as I am. Could use some help here. Otherwise, I will have to go the National Archives in Maryland.

Thanks,

Dennis Pluchinsky

Hello to All 30th Group,
There is a nice article about the 30th Infantry in the current, September, 2010, issue of "Automobile" magazine. The article is about the movements of the 30th from D-Day to V-E Day. This national recognition has transpired because my brother, Joe, works for "Automobile", and our father was with the 30th in Europe in WWII. Dad wrote a journal while on the move during '44 and '45. I've been dreaming and talking about retracing the Route of March with the specific places that Dad talks about in the journal. Joe got involved, we drove the route this summer, and he wrote the article. It's got a bit of car stuff in it, but is 90% about the 30th's travels and action in Europe.

Joe intersperses his account of our retracing travels with excerpts from Dad's original journal. It makes for very good reading. You all will enjoy the read and love seeing our 30th Infantry Division featured. (Dad was in the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, which supported the 117th Infantry Regiment all the way across Europe.)

"Automobile" is not on all newsstands, but definitely is on the bigger and in major bookstores. It's widely distributed in airports. Thanks to all who participate in extending this 30th Infantry recognition and fame.

My grandfather, Walter Revis of Hyden, KY. was a Forward Artillery Observer in the 30th. He is still alive and strong at 90, but unfortunately suffering from dementia. I plan on retracing his path across France into Germany, and would like to talk online to other vets who served during this time. I know he was at Omaha Beach sometime around the 10th of June, onto St. LO, the Ardennes in December of 44 and, what I can ascertain was Magbeurg on the Elbe. He has mentioned meeting Russians as the two armies met in Arpil of 45. My grandfather has been very reticent on the subject of his time in the war. He only spekas aobut his time before and after. I assume memories too terrible to recount. Any more accounts I can hear from? I'm a young man who has always had a keen interest in history and believes strongly in these accounts being told to the next generations. Would love any info.
I also found recently some photos of his with names of buddies written on the back . I don't know his regiment offhand, but can get the info. Any info on these people? Are you one of these people? Stranger things have happened.

My sister and I are very proud of him, of course, and have many items he had sent and brought back from overseas that we cherish. He was originally from Ohio but was living in Pa. when he went into the service in 1941 but, unfortunatley, he passed away in 1972 and had many friends that he told me about who he served with.

If there is anyone out there who knew him, please let me know.
